LEAD FORESTER


We are looking for an experienced Lead Forester to join our Grosvenor Forstry and Conservation Team. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a broader team with increasing and renewed focus on woodland management, arboriculture, conservation and timber processing.


About Grosvenor Rural Estates
Grosvenor Rural Estates is responsible for the long-term stewardship of three rural estates in the United Kingdom. This role will be based at our Eaton Estate, just outside Chester city centre.  


Working to protect, enhance, and restore sensitive environmental habitats within these unique locations and improving local property and places, our aim is to be a leading example of sustainability within the rural economy - contributing to the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of the communities we are part of. 


The Role
Reporting to the Head of Forestry, the main purpose of the role is to lead a forestry team and to organise, supervise and implement day-to-day forestry tasks such as harvesting, planting and maintenance. The Lead Forester will deal with operational health and safety which includes risk assessment, maintenance of machinery and supervision of staff and contractors. The role will be outdoors approximately four days a week with one office day to keep records up to date.


Key responsibilities
• Lead and organise the work of a forestry team and contractors
• Deliver the practical management and maintenance of Eaton’s trees, woodland and landscape including felling and extraction of timber to meet the annual harvesting programme. Other key forestry work areas are building forest roads, planting and mechanical drainage.
• Recording costs and scheduling of key jobs
• Contribute to annual budgeting
• Comply with company policy and best practise in security, legal and regulatory compliance
• Ensure H&S responsibilities are fulfilled


Essential skills and attributes
• Forestry based qualification or evidence of forestry based learning
• Experience of undertaking forestry operations
• Full driving licence
• Organisational skills and discipline
• People management and leadership skills
• Sound problem solving skills and the ability to work on your own initiative
• Critical thinking
