A NEW fully-funded training programme is set to open doors for young people interested in pursuing a career in forestry.

The Forestry Operations New Entrants Programme, a collaborative initiative between Aviva Investors, Par Equity, and Scottish Woodlands, is now accepting applications for its first intake of aspiring foresters.

The intensive five-week programme aims to equip up to eight new entrants with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in woodland operations and contribute to sustainable forest management. Candidates should be at least 18 years old and physically fit.

"This is an excellent opportunity for young people in North-East Scotland to kickstart a rewarding career in forestry," said Neil Crookston, North Region director for Scottish Woodlands. "We're looking for motivated individuals who are passionate about the outdoors and want to make a positive impact on our environment.

“Scottish Woodlands is delighted to be part of this exciting programme by providing site visits to the trainees, and expert guidance from our experienced staff.”

Topics covered in the wide-ranging training programme include emergency first aid, tree planting, pesticide use, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) operation, fencing, and site surveys. The course also provides support with CV building and interview skills and will give successful candidates the chance to chat to would-be employers.

The training takes place at the Scottish School of Forestry in Inverness and starts on Monday, February 24 2025. Free accommodation is provided.
